Data Modelling Overview
·
Cognos
Analytics to access and shape data from data servers or uploaded files.
·
Many
sources of data
o
relational
databases,
o
Hadoop-based
technologies,
o
Microsoft
Excel spreadsheets,
o
and
text files
·
Refine a data module in many ways.
o
Creating
calculations.
o
Defining
data filters.
o
Referencing
additional tables.
o
Reviewing
and updating metadata properties that include aggregation settings and labels.
·
Data
modules can be used in both dashboards and reports.
·
A
dashboard can beassembled from multiple data modules.
·
Data
modeling in Cognos Analytics does not replace Framework Manager, Cube Designer,
or Transformer, which remainavailable for more complex modeling.
Intent-driven
modeling
You can use
intent-driven modeling to add tables into your data module. When possible, the
intent-driven modeling proposal is a star or snowflake of tables.
Data Module
You can create data modules by combining inputs from up to four
types of input sources:
1.
Other
data modules
2.
Data
servers
3.
Uploaded
files
4.
Data
sets
When you create a new data module from the home screen of IBM
Cognos Analytics. You are presented with five possible input sources in Sources
1. Data modules
2. Data servers
3. Uploaded files
4. Data sets
5. Packages
Five possible
input sourcesfor Data module
Packages
Packages are created in IBM Cognos Framework Manager and contain
dimensions, query subjects, and other data contained in Cognos Framework
Manager Projects. You can use packages as sources for a data module.
Uploaded files
Uploaded files are data that are stored with the Upload files facility.
Data servers
Data servers are databases for which connections exist and can
be used as source for data modules.
Data modules: Data
modules are source objects that contain data from data servers, uploaded files,
or other data modules, and are saved.
Data sets
Data sets contain extracted data from a package or a data
module.
Creation
of data server
·
Click
Manage > Data server connections.
·
In
the Data server connections panel, click the Create a new connection icon.
·
Select
the data server type.
·
In
the Create a new connection to a data server panel, type a unique name for the
connection, along with the data server connection details. The data server
connection details can vary by data server type. Consult your database
administrator for the data server connection details.
·
If
applicable, click advanced to specify more connection details. For example, you
can specify a Cognos-specific property in the Connection properties field. For
information about the supported properties, see the topic about Cognos-specific
connection parameters in the IBM Cognos Analytics Administration and Security
Guide.
·
Specify
the type of sign-on for the connection. You have the following choices.
·
Connect
anonymously Choose this option when anonymous connections are allowed to the
data server.
·
IBM
Cognos Windows Service credentials Choose this option to use the credentials of
the Windows domain account that is running the IBM® Cognos® Analytics service.
This option is only applicable to Microsoft data servers. Prompt for the user
ID and password Choose this option when the user must be prompted for database
credentials with each use. Use the IBM Cognos Analytics credentials
·
Choose
this option to use the credentials that are stored in Content Manager for a
user, instead of the credentials stored for a sign-on. Use the following saved
credentials Choose this option to store a user name and password for any user
to connect to the data server.
·
Click
Test to verify that the data server connection works.
Data server connections are created in Manage >Data

Refining a data module
The initial data module that you create manually or using
intent modeling mightcontain data that is not required for your reporting
purposes.
You can refine your data module by applying the following
modifications:
·
Add
or delete tables.
·
Edit
or create new relationships between tables.
·
Change
column properties.
·
Create
basic and custom calculations.
·
Define
filters.
·
Group
data.
·
Clean
the text data.
·
Hide
tables and columns.
·
Undoand
redoactions up to 20 times
Source panel
·
The
source panel shows the sources of data that were selected when the data module
was created. Data servers, uploaded files, and other data modules.
·
Drag
tables onto the data module panel or onto the diagram to add them to the data
module.
Data module panel
·
The
data module tree shows the tables and columns of data that is included in the
data module.
·
Click
the context menu icon
for
the module, table creating filters and calculations, or renaming and deleting
items.

The
diagram is a graphical representation of table relationships in a data module.

The diagram now shows the cardinality relationships
between different tables in your data module. Move the Degrees of separation slider. diagram shows different distances of relationships between tables.

Data
set
Introduction
·
You can create data set that
can contains selected tables and rows from saved data modules.
·
A data set contains data stored
as a single table in a columnar format.
·
The data in a data set is
extracted from a package or a data module.
·
One you have saved a data set,
you can schedule regular refreshes of the data by creating schedule in the
properties of the data set.
·
Cognos Analytics introduces a
new type of gateway to data – they are called data sets.
·
Define a data set by choosing
one or more items (columns) from a package or data module, and apply filters to
reduce the data
·
Data sets can be used to gather
a customized collection of items that you use frequently.
Why data set
Because
the data is cached, data sets can improve query performance and reduce the
workload on your database(s). Here’s some reasons to use a data set.
·
improve query performance if
your database is slow
·
reduce the load on an
overworked database (especially during peak periods)
·
retain a version of the data at
a specific time
Data
Sets capability introduced in IBM Cognos Business Intelligence v10.2.2
The administrator must first grant you access to these two
Cognos Connection components:
·
a Data Sets repository
·
the My Data Sets page
Creation of data set
·
From Team content Navigate to
your package / data module click on the ellipsis next to your package name and
choose "Create data set".
·
Populate the data set by choosing which columns you would like
in your data set.

Drag data
item which you wants to include in Data set like product line, sales total.
You
have the option to summarize
detailed values, suppressing duplicates.
Refreshing/Scheduling
your Data Set
Through the Cognos Analytics portal, you can change a data set’s
columns and filters anytime you want. You can also update its data either
on-demand or schedule the refreshes to occur automatically including weekly,
daily, hourly or every X minutes.
Team content >> Data set >>

Scheduling reports and Sending by mails:
Default prompt value set in C11 report:
Access we can control by as same as C10
however when we need report or folder level access control use below.
Access provided report level:
Public Folder path >> … Report

Access provided report folder level:

Another alternative way to provide data / license
access:
Here is example of “Capco Admin” group how
to add user. Same way we can add other groups as well.

Copy or move reports / folder single reports:
Difficulties is copy multiple reports
